When we think of the word “war”, our minds usually go to armed military conflicts between nations. While the United States government is especially guilty of engaging in this sort of activity, the Texas State government wages wars on its own citizens on innumerable fronts.
The war on drugs, the war waged against citizens by the police, the war on the homeless, on the poor, on the disenfranchized, on people minorities, on sex workers and all workers, on the mentally ill have all proven to be disasterous and harmful.
We must remain vigilant in our compassion for our fellow human beings.

Nationalism is a pox on our souls, and no more is this malady made manifest by our desire to form ingroups and outgroups based on arbitrary lines in the dirt, dreamed up by bureaucrats. We use these imaginary lines in the dirt to do very real harm to those with the misfortune of not being born via happenstance into the same comparative opulence as us. Many are familiar with the horrors perpetrated at the borders of our country, separating families and losing children to the system in abhorrent conditions, but few know the true extent of the horrors specific to the previous administration, and the rollback of legal immigration measures.
America is nation of immigrants. We can, and should, return to the days when Americans no longer quiver in fear of our global neighbors.

The death penalty is barbaric, cruel, uncompassionate, and Texas MUST repeal this archaic means of punishment.
We should not, under any circumstances, grant the state the power to determine whether someone lives or dies. Our government, including the ever flawed justice system, is made up of individual human beings, who admittedly make mistakes. We cannot afford human error, or worse, to result in the demise of a fellow human being - there is no going back from that and serves justice to no one.
Condemning someone to death admits in the most extreme of ways that a person cannot be redeemed and that our current prison system does not, in fact, rehabilitate.
